New York Post Thinks Obama's a Monkey?

I hate sending out another message so soon, but I felt compelled to respond. The New York Post has apparently decided that our new president reminds them of an ape. Perhaps I am wrong, but my investigation has led me to believe that there is no other explanation for this unbelievable portrayal. Perhaps it was a misguided reference to the fact that the cartoonist has a problem with the nature of the last stimulus package. But it is certainly a lack of cultural competency which leads this organization to think that it might be ok to portray an African American as a monkey. This goes back to the fact that as long as "mainstream" media maintains its commitment to segregation among hosts, editors, and producers, we are always going to have this problem.

This cartoon is very serious, for many reasons. Here are some undeniable facts:

1) The New York Post had better start explaining things fast. You've seriously undermined your journalistic integrity with a cartoon that is not funny, insightful or meaningful in any apparent way and also appears to be horrifically offensive.

2) This cartoon appears to be making a joke about killing the President, which is both unpatriotic and a serious threat to the Obama family and our nation. I can't recall ever seeing the New York Post or any relevant publication having the audacity to make jokes about shooting The President of the United States.

3) Referring to our first Black president as a monkey reminds us that the rise of Barack Obama may bring out the most beautiful parts of America and the ugliest. To have executives at such a powerful news organization sign off on this kind of juvenile, vile, and frightening work tells us that our country still needs a racial overhaul.

4) If the New York Post is unable to come forth with a reasonable explanation for this cartoon (I am not sure what shooting a chimp has to do with the Stimulus Package), all fair-minded Americans should not only write and complain to the Newspaper, but they should boycott and voice their concerns with any corporation choosing to supply this newspaper with advertising revenue.

I'm having my staff dig up contact information on the New York Post, as well as phone numbers and addresses. We are also going to find out who the major corporate sponsors are. I will post them on my blog as soon as I get the information.

Sincerely,
Dr Boyce

I am very upset that the New York Post would publish such an ugly and mean spirited cartoon and I agree is a direct threat to President Obama's safety. We need to stand up against this hatred.

Well .... -- this might surprise you, but I diagree with you. Since it is known that Obama did not write the bill, but instead left it to the "monkeys"in Congress...... I do not make the connection that Rev AL did until I heard it on the news. It looked like a definite slur on the Bill itself, since it contains so many problems, but, I didn't think anymore of it. Let us not forget the many things we see from political humorist -- including this http://www.metacafe.com/watch/1261271/george_bush/.

Damn Boyce didn't you once refer to Bush as a chimp and Juan Williams as a happy negro? I don't see the problem here.

The picture of the two policemen shooting a monkey is symbolic of white cops shooting a black man period! People need to open their eyes and stop being deceived! We blacks have become too relaxed in America, their is still racism i dont care how much it tries to hide its hideous face. that picture is a direct attack on our black President. If he didnt write the stimulus bill he is the one who is the one who created it! wake up black Americans!!

I think it's time for a nationwide boycott of the NY Post

I agree with Larry. This is something to be taken very seriously and a boycott is a good place to start and I've been sending emails to friends and posted doc's post on FaceBook...I was glad to hear NPR cover the story this evening and hope there will be more expressed outrage. Was just wondering when the racism would rear its ugly head against our new leader in a major way. And this is dangerous power of suggestion.

Another thing, I hope people will stop comparing Barak Obama to Abe Lincoln cus we know what happened to Abe.

May divine light protect Obama and his family and may the stupid, mean-spirited, racist, ignorant bastard comic be taken to task.

calm down my black peeps!!!! this cartoon ISNT racist!! the cops shot a chimp (a wild animal) living w/ a crazy woman who fed it wine and sleeping pills while sleeping w/ it in bed. the chip ripped her face off!!! the stimulus bill was NOT! i repeat, NOT written by Barack Obama!!!!! it was written by Nancy Pelosi and the House Democrats!!!! not a single republican voted for it!!! chimps have always been regarded by ppl as subhuman so the cartoon is saying that a chimp can type up a better stimulus bill than Nancy Pelosi and the House!!! calm down my black peeps!!!!! remember all the Chimp/Bush cartoons????

Mary said...

ok, ok, i'm calm but this still needs to be reckoned with simply due to the fact that everything is subject to interpretation. That is it not racist to you is your take. You are not the cartoonist, not in his head so your statement is only your opinion, your experience. The fact remains that many people, myself included, find the associations offensive and it touches our fear, our past wounds. It is just o close to home...

O.K. we can look at it in both ways,if you want to play devil's advocate, as Americans we do have the freedom of speech. What was expressed in the picture was a sense of racism but we as African Americans have to get over that and move on. So what somebody calls someone else a name, it's elementary, get over it! If you know that you are not a "monkey" move on with grace and prove them wrong. We as African Americans need to have our own magazine so that we do not have to read the New York Post or other cultural bias magazines. Lets have "our" own! We should lead by example instead of complaining and protesting for people to stop expressing what they feel in THEIR magazines. DON'T pick it up and when the sells fall then maybe they will take a second look at the content that they provide. This is not only the first time something like this happen. We also have to remember that media is a world of its own it has no color! It is all about money and who can get the next story by all means. Rather it's good attention or bad as long as it gets attention. So I leave with saying black people get strong and lets get us together first then we can work on what people say. Lets get our children back to school and off the streets and what about we stop all the black on black crime. We have too much on our plates to worry about what the New york Times has to say.

I am both outraged and disgusted by what this cartoon portrays. How dare this cartoonist insult not only MY president, but also any american who is for racial equality. I feel that the remarks in the cartoon allows us to see that the racial inuendo was for any black american who can read..My name is Lindsey Moore, and the only reason it says anonymous is because I have no goole account, but I want you to know exactly who I am!!!!!!!

I don't know what to say this hate filled cartoon artist. But I must state this as a fact that as long as such nonsense is allowed racism hatred and unconstitutionalism on behalf of the Black race still does exist.I want to ask the cartoonist Why would he/she mpost such a thing without puting a picture of his mom next to to see who truly resembles the ape?

Well all I can say is that I am appauled by this cartoon. Racism once again rears its ugly head. Many of times black people are accused of having an obession with race but it seems that obviously white people can't get over their sick obsession with race. Not only are they depicting our president as an ape but they have police officers killing the ape in the cartoon. I don't know but I see a hidden message in the cartoon regarding police brutality towards black as well. It all makes me sick to the stomach.

Okay. We've all read it, and understand the problem. While I wonder how many Black folk actually read the NY Post and how effective a physical boycott might be, I am certain that an economic boycott would be the way to go.

We need to stop talking about the problem now and focus on the solution, i. e., our response. Where are the addresses and telephone numbers of the Post, their executives, their board members, etc. Let's start flooding their telephones and email. More important we need to begin posting the names and contact information of their sponsors and start blowing their phones up; listing the consumer products, goods and services they offer; and determining how their bread is buttered.

We must stop complaining and start taking action when these folk decide that they can just do or say whatever they want to. They have a right to say what they'd like. The Post made a conscious decision to allow the cartoon to run didn't they? So be it. It's their prerogative! And it's our prerogative to address the matter however we'd like. It's not what THEY do, it's how WE RESPOND to it.

While the Post has a right to spew their racism, we have a right to determine where and how we spend our money. Simple as that. So, please, let us stop talking about this insanity the and allow our economic power to speak to the New York Post on our behalf. Can we do that people?
