Someone sent this over to YourBlackWorld in response to the reactions of readers to our previous posts about the rift between Smiley and Obama. We are not sure if the person is from Tavis Smiley's group or not. However, I have received phone calls from close friends of Tavis, and rightfully so, they would like us to provide a balanced perspective. We thank them for this submission.
Senator Barack Obama and the State of the Black Union 2008
Tom Joyner Morning Show
Thursday, February 14, 2008
By now many, if not most of you, have either read or heard about the letter faxed to me by Senator Barack Obama yesterday to officially inform me that he would not be attending the State of the Black Union symposium next Saturday, February 23, in New Orleans, live on C-SPAN. The letter was apparently made public on the Internet by the Obama campaign.
This morning a few thoughts now about the letter, about Senator Obama and for that matter, about Michelle Obama.
First, I want to thank Senator Obama for his letter, although I regret his decision. I said on Tuesday and I reiterate today, that I believe that this is a critical miscalculation and a missed opportunity.
Having said that, I also feel that should Senator McCain or Governor Huckabee, like Mr. Obama,
end up denying our invitation to appear at this annual Black think tank, it would also be for them as well, in the long run, a critical miscalculation and a missed opportunity.
Particularly for Senator John McCain, who appears to now be the presumptive Republican nominee and who decided, as you recall, not to appear last year before Black America in Baltimore.
Indeed, I personally expressed that sentiment to Senator McCain earlier this week. Don’t think that in the general election, should he be the nominee, that he ain’t going to get reminded frequently that he kept passing on opportunities to speak to Black and Brown audiences. That’s pretty much Political Science 101. That’s going to happen, trust me.
Two. For the record, with regard to this letter and the statements made therein, my office was never contacted by the Obama campaign offering Michelle Obama as a proxy speaker. It never happened.
No letter. No fax. No e-mail. No phone call. No document whatsoever from the Obama camp to my office, ever, regarding Michelle Obama. She was never offered, it was never discussed.
Three. While I have great admiration and affection for Michelle Obama, had she been offered to us I would have respectfully declined. Just as we would have declined had Hillary Clinton offered Bill Clinton; had John McCain offered Cindy McCain; had Mike Huckabee suggested Janet Huckabee.
By any measure, by any measure, Michelle Obama’s personal story is empowering and inspiring. I am moved by her personal story, as I have been, since I first met her. From the South side of
Chicago to Princeton, to Harvard Law, it is a quintessential American story of overcoming.
That said, last year at Howard, live on PBS, we spoke to candidates only. And that’s what we intend to do next Saturday, February 23, in New Orleans, live on C-SPAN, speak to candidates only, with all due respect.
And speaking of Howard, point number four. When we invited Senator Obama last year to
Howard, with all of the other announced Democratic candidates at the time, so many people, so
many people, said publicly, that Tavis is stacking the deck in Obama’s favor. Black college. Black
book. Black audience. Black journalists. Black moderator. “Smiley is stacking the deck for
Obama,” they said.
The Washington Post Editorial Board said that to me to my face. “Aren’t you stacking the deck for Mr. Obama?” Now, eight months later, another simple invitation, along with all the other
remaining viable candidates, and now he’s being boxed in by me?
Respectfully, that dog just won’t hunt. Because by that logic, at this point in the campaign, any
gathering of Black thought-leaders, opinion-makers and influencers who invite Senator Obama to appear on stage at a nationally televised event, that invitation --- in and of itself, given that logic ---would be tantamount to “boxing him in.”
This was simply an invitation, nothing more. There has not been, there is not now, nor will there
be, any effort on my part to snap on the Obama campaign, or the McCain campaign or the
Huckabee campaign, if they choose not to attend. It was just an invitation to him and every other
candidate. Accept or reject. An invitation, nothing more, nothing less.
I’ve lost count now of how many debates the Democrats have had to address other issues that, in
fact, do matter to us. But I can tell you exactly how many times they’ve gathered to specifically
address our issues. There is no comparison.
Point number five. Senator Obama is on a mission. As he suggested in his letter, his mission is to
become the next President of the United States. And I ain’t mad at him. As I’ve said before, and I’ll say it again, I revel in his historic run for the White House. As a Black man, I celebrate his past accomplishments. I celebrate his future aspirations.
Respectfully, I knew Barack Obama long before most of us learned to pronounce his name
correctly. So long ago, in fact, that years ago Barack Obama was working with the kids in my
Foundation, speaking to them about leadership development way back when.
I have no personal animus toward Barack Obama.
To quote that great philosopher, George Wallace, “I love him and there ain’t nothing he can do
about it!” That said, I love Black people, too. And I have a vocation. I have a calling. I have a
purpose. And since this ain’t just about me, you have a purpose too. You have a calling, you have a vocation as well.
And I would hope, this morning, that at the center of our collective calling, is an unconditional love for Black people. His job right now is to get elected. Our job is to do our part to ensure that
whoever gets elected will be held accountable to the issues that matter most to Black people.
And in that regard, all that I have ever tried to do, with the media platforms, including this one, that I have been blessed to have access to, is to attempt to speak a love language, to ask critical
questions, to engage in sober assessment and to counsel wise enthusiasm.
If Barack Obama is your candidate, I ain’t mad at you! If Hillary Clinton is your candidate, I ain’t
mad at you! I am not personally in the endorsement business. My small part is to engage in
Socratic questioning. As a Black person, a member of the media, I’ve said many times on this
program, my job is to ask questions, raise issues, address topics, and profile people that otherwise wouldn’t get that kind of air play.
Now, as the old folk used to say, “I done spoke my piece.”
Senator Clinton has decided to join us. Senator Obama has decided not to. Senator McCain and
Governor Huckabee, we shall see.
But once again, it has never, ever been about them. It has always been about us. We cannot
confuse candidates with the cause. The cause of suffering Black people who are catching hell every day.
So, I personally; I can only speak for Tavis, I personally have no intention, no interest in discussing this matter beyond this commentary no matter what’s said about me. Except to promote the Symposium, which I’ve done every year for almost 10 years now.
I’m told by the folk in the Lt. Governor’s office in Louisiana that it looks like we will have the
largest gathering of volunteers for a single day next Friday on our Day of Service, since Katrina hit back in 2005. That’s what matters. Loving and serving everyday Black people.
Our conversation next Saturday promises to be spirited, soulful and inspiring.
Finally this morning, as I always say...today, more than ever...love wins. Love wins. Love wins.
Happy Valentine’s Day!

I am shocked, truly shocked. But this campaign has allowed the American people not only a choice on candidates, but a choice on how we view those that we give public forum to. Tavis is rightly so to be disappointed that Barack Obama could not attend his symposium, but to make a large out cry on it, shows more of Travis Smiley's lack of character and his larger than thou Ego than anything else. Barack Obama is campaigning in a very tight campaign for the highest office in our Country, and Tavis Smiley wants him to come and discuss issues at his Symposium. Give a brother a break...he didn't say he couldn't come because he had to go fishing..the road ahead is long and treacherous, and then to have Tavis Smiley making a big uproar on this, leaves me speechless but not surprised anymore. Oh and by the way Tavis the only reason Hillary is attending is because she is still trying in anyway she can to divide and conquer, and if she can get to any event to get open airtime she will. I hope that you will be as hard on her as you were on BARACK if she begins to disrespect him.
By the way I hope that you will not be to mad at me that I didn't watch your show last week...I had to take care of my sick father.....
tavis doesn't seem to understand that his refusal to accept michelle obama as a surrogate for barack obama is a slap in the face to the struggle of african americans and others who are clamoring and working to support this historic movement for change.
michelle has been a highly articulate and impassioned representative of her husband's message to america . she would have been a great asset and a breath of fresh air in what has become a predictable platform for the grandstanding by tavis and some other blowhards participating in "the state of black america".
furthermore if the brother doesn't soon wake up and smell the coffee he is sure jeopardize his corporate funding . his sponsors will yield to the collective pressure of black and other progressive forces and drop him like he's hot.
if they did it to don imus ,with his huge following, they'll do it to you, tavis.
reign in that outsized ego my brother and you may yet get back on the good foot.
My only problem with Tavis is he waited TOO LATE to have it. He was holding his discussion in New Orleans, LA. The Louisiana primaries occurred roughly 2 weeks ago. He should have had it at least 2 to 3 weeks prior when the candidates were campaigning there. I don't care if Obama wants to be president of all. But, I do care about the issues and Tavis needs to use carpe diem - seize the moment, instead of being late!
Tavis, please shut your mouth. Your ego is seriously INFLATED. Everybody but you understands why Senator Obama couldn't attend your little symposium. Are you even aware that he's running for president? You owe the Obama's an apology, NOW.
Obama has no pro-black agenda. So why would we expect Obama to participate in a conference purely pro-black in content and context? Obama's platform is populist, pro-white appeasement, nothing more or less.
Tavis has a right to be angry as should many more black Americans. But so many of us are drinking the Obama koolaid of change, this man can do no wrong. And we don't even know what CHANGE Obama will bring. No one does.
Unlike Obama, Tavis has consistently stood for the advancement and progression of the black collective. Obama's record shows that he has not. And for Michelle to appear means nothing. First ladies have no function, value or place in American politics, just read your history books.
Tavis, you keep doing what you do, don't make any apologies to the blacks that don't even have the intellectual fortitude to question Obama's lack of character and record. If anyone owe's someone an apology, it's Obama who should. I don't see Tavis pimping his wife out to do what he has dedicated his professional life to do.
Stay Real Tavis...

Bro. Tavis, go ahead WYBS and continue to engage us in critical thinking on the things that really matter. Go ahead WYBS and set the record straight and how disrespectful of Obama to refuse to attend this awesome event to get a better perspective on the future governance for our country's most at risk population. We should organize state and national elections for the president and governors of Black America. Perhaps, just a symbolic representation of the ideal-actual. We need to begin envisioning and organizing our political structures and let Black power live again. But, seriously though, wouldn’t it be fun and liberating to have a president of Black America and Bro. Smiley, you have my vote. However, I have always considered Minister Farakhan as my president of Black America.
Obama is a Republican operative set to divide the Democrat party so that the Republicans can win the white house again. Black folks are calling the Clintons racist eventhough during 1992 to 2000, blacks experienced the greatest economic boom to lower the gap between whites than under Reagan, Bush Sr. or Bush Jr. The media (including CNN Contributor Bill Bennett who thinks aborting black babies will reduce crime in the U.S.) is supporting Obama. They know that we as blacks are stupid to fall for a smooth talking individual without substance because he will divide the democrats and Clinton support and we will loose the presidency in Nov-08. If Obama wins, he will pick Edwards as his VP candidate and get swiftboated like his buddy Kerry in 2004. By Obama not picking Clinton with the strong women, hispanic, asian and democratic base, will not support him. That is why they need each other. The media, controlled by Republicans, are trying to persuade us to not see the big picture. Which is just sad because economically and foreignly we need Clintons to help us smooth the relations and get the economy running again like they did in 1992. Unbelievable.
Letter to Tavis
1. Tavis, remember that “Tavis Smiley” is a brand. You have national and international brand recognition which it’s value is possibly worth millions of dollars. In your case, your brand is synonymous with your legal name. At this point you really need to protect this brand by any means necessary and distance yourself from this issue. It would be more cost effective to maintain the favorable brand recognition than to rebuild it.
2. Create a new focus on your agenda that would create as much of a stir as this issue between you and Senator Obama and move on to improve your personal productivity and creativity.
3. Remember that you are a media voice and the public expects you to present your issues in a more objective manner in order to retain your credibility.
4. Don’t let this issue be a major defining moment in your career because life is long.
5. Find a more diplomatic method of making your point.
6. Do not forget to balance everything moderately.
7. The scriptures say, do not let your good be spoken of as evil.
8. Passion and calling doesn’t make you perfect in execution.
9. You are educated and wealthy enough to be able to make the same point without creating this level of controversy and distractions.
10. You may want to consider consulting an independent public relations firm in this one instance to help rehabilitate your image.
11. Always keep a few antagonistic thinkers within your inner circle.
12. Stop laying out your justification every time you reference your statements about Senator Obama. (That is the type of reaction that most people would expect from a novice).
13. Some black people take issue with the implication we as black people need a caregiver to interpret, analyze and guide us.
14. As you know, black people are not monolithic, we have diverse interest and goals. Most are going to vote their interest.

This is a perfect example of a black on black crime, if you will. Here you have Travis, who wants to interupt the Senator from Illinois, on his campaign in Texas a hotly contested battle in the Democratic party, Mr. Obama does not have the time to make a visit to New Orleans at this time. When he was there on his campaign that was the time to have any meetings. It seems to me that Travis who was a part of B.E.T. has close ties to the uncle Tom of a president who went after Mr. Obama while stumping for Hillary Clinton. Yes just another hopeless attack againg Senator Obama!
Ok guys, I think we can civily disagree with Tavis Smiley and his Black Forum without threatening to kill his family. Any black knucklehead who threatened his family over his idea to invite Obama to it is STUPID and no better than the KKK and Neo Nazis.
Do I agree it is bad timing? Yes. Could it have been held during the same time Louisiana Primary when Obama was campaigning there? Yes.
But, threatening his family for Obama who is likely to get assassinated because the Secret Service is stopping to screen people as he inches closer to being the Democratic Nominee is ridiculous. For those of you who disagree with Tavis, just disagree. Don't threaten a mans life.
As a 65yr.old,old enough to be both Tavis and Obama's mother, I have lived and experienced quite a bit.I say to both that BLACKS,before you both were born made the progress that you enjoy by
standing together. If you want to have a forum in and discuss the problems in New Orleans do it.
Let Obama run his campaign.Later come to the table and lay your ideas out,see what works and what doesn't.GOD INVITID JOSHUA TO COME AND REASON TOGETHER,and JESUS,said

Tavis Smiley is a sellout just as his name suggests. Let’s not pretend sellouts no longer exists simply because we do not like the use of the word. Tavis’s commentary is sponsored by WalMart on the Tom Joyner Morning Show and not only does he vehemently supports Hilliary Clinton but he also attacks Obama every chance he gets. Ever since Hilliary mentioned Tavis in one of her speeches he’s been a zealed for her by going far and above the extra mile in attacking Sen. Obama.
Sure I once respected Tavis in the past as a positive voice for Black America but I also had a reserved sense that he’s not fully who he claims to be. He’s an opportunist who’s not very successful, which is why he’s never been fully accepted nor respected as a journalist. This is now proven more so today because he’s using his public voice to serve the needs of the establishment.
How can anyone claim Tavis has the voice of Black people while 90% of Black America supports Barack Obama. Is it about a bandwagon, sure if it means jumping on the bandwagon for true and positive change instead of sitting on the sidelines throwing bricks and hiding your hands. Tavis’s letter to Sen. Obama is pathetic and weak because he claims it’s a simple invitation in which he sent to all candidates yet he’s buck dancing for the media crying Obama has a “Missed Opportunity”, give me a break. Mr. Smiley is simply supporting Hilliary because he was directed to do so and he’s acting like any other good dog by attacking whomever his master tells him. Yes people, doing one enormous bad deed will wipe out all the good deeds a person has ever done. Tavis Smiley is a sellout in every sense of the word!
Being a sellout does not mean we as blacks need to threaten the man or his family's life b/c we support Obama. Support Obama, but don't threaten the man's life b/c he wanted him to address the issues of Black America.
I just pray Obama does not suffer the same fate as his mentors Lincoln, MLK, JFK, and RFK. So, people who know history and the use of lynchings to intimidate blacks from not seeking political power in U.S. won't tell you Obama Supporters, I told you so.
Leave whitey alone. There are other ways to get economic and education access and make it happen. He does not have to loose his life for all of Black America and America and the world to be better.
We thought we learned that, but unfortunately, Obama is very cocky and think his kool-aid does not stink. I just hope that history won't repeat itself - I have a feeling it will.
Let's Think Black People:
Tavis is a proven leader for black and brown folks. So why should we put him on blast. I hate to say this Mr. Obama has not proven anything yet. Look at the his record.
He say's that he can bring folk's together, his record in the Senate has not proven that at all. That's Fact.
For Obama not to accept that invite to come to the Black State of the Union is sign of disrespect for his people. He (Obama) has to remember, he is still a Black man in America regardless if he is the President or not.
Hell, Ms. Clintion, is running behind in the polls and she took the time to come out to support this event and address our people.
Why couldn't he do the same?
This is Black History month as we celebrate the folks that paved the way for Obama to do his thing.
Let's SHOW THE RESPECT FOR THE BLACK FOLKS WHO ARE VOTING over
70 % OR BETTER IN EVERY STATE FOR YOU MR. OBAMA. EVEN THE ONES HE LOST LIKE MY STATE IN NJ.
We all know some black folks in our every day walk who say one thing and do another. Let's not be blinded because he is a Brother.
I voted for Obama in NJ but, if I had to do it today, he would not get ice water from me. JUST FOR THAT INSULT TO HIS PEOPLE.
Inclosing, To attack Mr. Smiley is uncalled for. Let's focus on the real issues. Tavis has proven his self worthy of our support. Mr. Obama has to earn that and prove that, before he get's that uppty Negro atittude.
The people who ar saying Check the Record on Obama regarding his dedication to Black issues obviously haven't. Look aty everything he did in the Illinois Legislature for Blacks including a major requirement that all Police Inverviews be video taped to stop the battering and coercive confessions that lead to so many of us being wrongfully convicted and sometimes even put on Death Row. Or does that not count? Regarding the U.S. Senate, that body moves very slowly. Yet even in that time, he has co-sponsored two major pieces of legislation. One Transparency in Government contracts means that all of us now can find out what company is getting what portion of our tax payment s and for what. Or is that a white only issue? Black people don't pay taxes I guess. Two, he co-sponsored a piece of legislation signed into law that helps stop Nuclear Proliferation regarding loose Soviet Nukes. Or do bobmbs only kill white people, not Black? Most Senators go for many years and multiple terms without having their name appear on one piece of significant legislation. He did this in his first 2 years in the Senate! Look at other Senators records as you say and find any of them that have had that type of accomplishment in not only 2 years, but in 6 years.
Those are the facts people. Educate yourselves before you step out there anb Blog inaccurate information.
But here is the problem with us as Blacks. We want all of our leaders to be PERFECT. After Martin Luther King set the bar, evidently you have to be perfect in every way, regarding having the proper set of Black Credentials, whatever they are, and be approved by the all of the self-imposed spokesmen for Black America.
That is ridiculas as no other Ethnic Group does this as far as I know especially as public as this has been done. We throw each other under the bus as quickly as we can. This is another of those situations. Back off and let ye without sin throw the first stone.
Regarding Tavis, my wish is that you would correct this situation in a manner that reverses this negative cycle. As an admirer and one of your Frat Brothers, I have nothing for love for you even though I disagree with what has occurred. Instead of going off the deep end and talking stuff about you like many of these bloggers, I am just saying fix it Brother. Let Obama run this race, and then sit down with him and get some real, concrete, action items going regarding the State of Black America. I am positive that can occur, especially with the fact that you have known him for years.
People! Don't let this media hype and our own tendancy for self-destruction knock two valuable African Americans out, Tavis and Obama both with one silly blow!
Dr. Boyce Watkins,
I agree with you. Tavis Smiley is VERY out of touch to think Senator Obama is unaware of black issues:
The ClintonS have taken jabs at Obama for BEING black, asserting that the only reason he won South Carolina was because he is black, therefore, the win in SC couldn’t possibly be taken seriously.
The ClintonS themselves alienated black voters, when they tried to play up Obama’s middle name, Hussein, and a picture of him in the garb of his father’s homeland to placate to anti-muslim and anti-freedom of religion sentiments and tensions.
After making a point of having Obama reject Min. Farrakhan at a debate, Hillary too was faced with having to address the racist statements of one of her prominent Latina supporters. Adelfa Callejo of Texas flat out stated on camera that “the only problem with Barack Obama is that he is black.” When asked if she rejected the support of Callejo, Hillary dodged the question and did not give a “strong” reply, and later sent an aide, not herself, to reject Callejo’s racism.
Tavis Smiley recently has appeared on Jeraldo’s talk show and had the audacity to state that the Hispanics vote for Clinton because of a “friendship;” and that Blacks vote for Obama because of black pride -oh , it couldn’t possibly be because The ClintonS have alienated black voters with their hypocritical race bating and Hillary’s Walmart tenure.
In short, Tavis Smiley went onto the Jeraldo show and LIED. Hispanic voters DO vote because of racial pride and Black voters DO have REASONS why not to vote for The ClintonS. I am very disappointed in Tavis at this time. Barack Obama is VERY aware of black issues, as well as, general diverse community issues by way of his ground zero community activism –something Hillary has never actively been hands on about.
It is naïve of Tavis to think that Obama is out of touch with black issues --he’s having to just deal with being black on this campaign. Tavis is being an enabler of mis-speak, concerning the state of race issues during this election. So Hillary showed up --SHE should have.
Obama is smart of enough to work on votes “across” the isle.
People who think Obama doesn’t have an outline for “Change” haven’t been listening and reading. The haters think that people can’t enjoy both the message AND the delivery of the message at the same time… this charge of people drinking the kool-aid crap is ridiculous. It’s the people who have a message, but deliver that message with mediocrity who are hating on Obama.
People who think Obama hasn’t brought people together, have been blind to his very campaign and the STRONG grass roots diversity working for a common goal.
I agree with the other comments that the caucus was “late.” Clinton still carried the lead in the upcoming primary vote states, according to some polls …she could take a minute. Obama was behind in the polls in these states… he could not take a minute. So, Tavis mouthing about Obama getting off of the “relevant” campaign trail is most unfortunate.
That caucus should have been planned better in terms of relevant timing to the voting process. Remember, IF Obama wins the nomination, then he can go back to New Orleans during the general election. NOT going to that caucus was sound and wise judgment on Obama’s part.
PS.
I am impressed with Obama, meh, ...this guy is holding his own against the double-teaming and name recognition of Hillary and her former president husband --The ClintonS. Damn. I don't care what political affiliation you’re with, this guy is EARNING this campaign. Given the way The ClintonS have been handling this campaign, it’s as if Obama is running against conservative Republicans for the Democratic nomination. :)
This saddens me :-( Partly because of the Tavis' comments; partly because of the retaliation against Tavis and his family, and partly because I find myself not feeling the same about Tavis as before, and questionning whether I can to continue to view and contribute to his programming.
And this notion to "Stay Real Tavis" as stated by blogger DBlack is ridiculous, not to mention the "First ladies have no function, value or place in American politics." HELLO!! DBlack, Former First Lady (Bill's Clinton's wife), Current Senator from New York, Hillary Clinton is running for President of the United States, so when you start to criticize the intellectual fortitude of Blacks, I suggest a critique a little closer to home.
Now, I offer this as constructive criticism because although I support, have, and will vote for Barack Obama, I have nothing negative to say against the Clintons even though I have not agreed with some of the tactics they've used in this primary campaign. You can support whomever you want to support. You just don't have to bash one candidate in order to support another one.
Question: Other than Barack Obama, who are the other elected officials we are requiring to "be held accountable to the issues that matter most to Black people." Name One. Name just one more that Tavis is willing to call out. But because Barack is running for the highest office in the land, Tavis put him on blast and require his accountability before he is even elected into the oval office. And since she like to tout her husbands experience like it was her own, did Tavis hold Hillary accountable about NAFTA deal that cost a number of Blacks to loose their jobs. To me, this seems like "issues that matter most to Black people," and we should hold Hillary accountable. Thanks Tavis
Everyone who is running for President should be scrutinized. Any suggestions that a particular race of people should vote for a canidate and sit back and be quiet just so that canidate can win an election without questioning and obtaining the facts is appalling. I don't care if the canidate is black, white, female, male or green!Concrete answers must be obtained now not later. If a canidate assumes they can use a group of people for votes and are unwilling to give their support for the people's cause/benefit/wellbeing because of the fear/assumption of how it may look to others than that canidate does not deserve the peoples vote. No man, no woman should resort to silencing ones voice so blindly. It maybe 2008 but far too many people too far behind the times.
