Nas Please Stop the Cooning, It's Not Cool

I respect Nas. I loved his song, “The Ether”. I consider Nas to be one of the most talented rappers in America. I backed his joint against Fox News, and I stand by much of what he’s doing. Here is where I have to draw some lines:

1) If you want to be a black leader, stop trying to kill off the black leaders who came before you. This is not a damn mafia movie, where you have to whack out the heads of the family to get your throne. Just do your thing. Getting your position in black leadership does not mean you have to attack Jesse Jackson in the process.

2) That thing about calling Jeremiah Wright a coon? That was, to be honest, the cooning-est thing I’ve ever heard you say. Dr. Wright was fighting for black people before your black ass was even an embryo. Dawg, that’s uncalled for. Wright didn’t come after you, he didn’t attack you, he didn’t say jack to you. So, your comments about Wright were simply out of control. To be more specific, here is what you said:

“That’s street corner shit. That’s that nigger shit, just on a higher level. That’s just a dumb-ass nigga. With all the degrees and intelligence he has, he throws all that out the window when he starts cooning. Reverend Wright is the biggest coon of the 21st century so far, and that’s just what it is. And I don’t give a fuck who he’s down with, where he studied at, he’s a great fucking coon.”

I’m done with this. I’ll support you Nas, and I respect you on many levels. But you have to pull the plug on all these strange publicity stunts. Attacking Jeremiah Wright, a man who has shown a lot more courage in his life than most brothers in the rap game, is just too much.

I actually will go ahead and say that most people are not smart enough to understand much of what Wright was saying so they simply fall for media propaganda.

Nas has a song attacking media propaganda yet he falls into it?

Either he is a hypocrite or just not smart!

In respect to Nas' comments regarding Rev. Wright, I must say that he expressed his feelings from a young man's perspective. I think that Rev. Wright, who is esteemed in his own right, did a horrible disgrace to such a historic campaign as Sen. Obama's efforts. I think that the younger generation is seeing the so-called civil rights generation at a stage of imperfection. There seems to be a bucking of the progression of new leadership. I think the young rappers who are somewhat interested in current events are watching this and speaking their minds. We haven't really had serious Black leadership on a national level since King. These young men are responding to Obama who is filling the gap but in a nuevo way. We must recognize this and encourage them to analyze all sides and express themselves in a more balanced way. I'm just glad to see them and young Black men and boys in the hood excited about their futures.

NAS IS CHANNELING THE NOTIONS OF YOUNG BLACK MEN...

I DID AGREE WITH REV. WRIGHT'S COMMENTS ABOUT EDUCATION IN REGARD TO BLACK CHILDREN VS. WHITE CHILDREN...

WHERE I DISAGREED WITH REV. WRIGHT IS HOW HE CARRIED OUT HIS STAND ON HIS COMMENTS WHERE I IN A LARGE PART FEEL IS TRUTH...

THIS IS CHESS NOT CHECKERS...WE KNOW WHERE WE ARE WITH OBAMA AND HIS MOVEMENT...REV. WRIGHT KNOWS THIS ALSO...THERE IS A LINE BETWEEN DEFENDING YOUR "OWN" STATEMENT WITHOUT WATERING DOWN SOMEONE ELSES MOVEMENT...ESPECIALLY SOMEONE WHO YOU KNOW PERSONALLY....

REV. WRIGHT IS AN ELDER..HE DESERVES HIS RESPECT FOR HIS WORK FOR THIS COMMUNITY...BUT, ON ANTOHER HAND OUR ELDERS...AND I CAN SPEAK TO THIS SUBJECT AD NAUSEM...HAVE TO BE THE LEADERS AND BE THE ONES WHO WILL PASS THE TORCH TO THOSE WHO ARE THE FUTURE LEADERS...WHICH IN OUR COMMUNITY THIS HAS YET TO BE ACCOMPLISHED...

I AM ABOUT INHERITANCE...I HAVE CHILDREN...MY JOB IS TO PASS THE KNOWLEDGE, WISDOM, WILL, RESPECT, HONOR, PURPOSE, AND LOVE TO THEM....NOT TO BE THE SHINING STAR OF MY EXISTENCE....

OUR ELDERS...WHOM I LOVE AND RESPECT DEARLY...HAVE TO HEAR OUR VOICES...NO MATTER HOW HARSH OUR WORDS MAY BE...THIS IS A FAMILY MEETING...AND FAMILY HAS TO COME TOGETHER TO TELL THE TRUTH...

WE HAVE DIFFERENT STAGES IN OUR STRUGGLE...SOME MARCHED..SOME PRAYED...SOME ESCAPED...SOME DIED...SOME DANCED..SOME BECAME "EDUCATED"...SOME RAN FOR OFFICE TO MAKE CHANGE...SOME EVEN EXPRESSED THEIR CREATIVE TALENTS TO BRING ABOUT A HIGHER CONSIOUSNESS...

WE CANNOT AND I MEAN CANNOT CONTINUE TO TELL EACHOTHER...WE ARE "WET BEHIND THE EARS, AND 'TOO YOUNG' TO BE A LEADER"...OR THAT OUR ELDERS ARE "COONING"...THIS IS UNCOUTH AS MY ANCESTOR MALCOM X STATED

WE ALL HAVE A PART TO PLAY IN OUR LIBERATION...YOUNG AND OLD...WHETHER WE ARE THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES...OR A HIP HOP ARTIST..OR A COMMUNITY LEADER...

THE ART OF COMMUNICATION BRINGS WISDOM AND UNDERSTANDING...WE NEED TO SPEAK TO EACHOTHER AS FAMILY...AND KEEP FOCUS ON THE TRUE OBJECTIVE.

I am so embarassed to be young. I am probably younger than everyone who commented but I have sense and education which seems to be lacking amongst some.

The issue is not Wright it is the mainstream media. Nas I thought would know that since he speaks out against Fox News and the media on his very own album. Didn't just have a rally protesting the network? Yet he like everyone else falls for the propaganda!!!

I have loved Nas since the age of 8 but this is a complete contradiction.

The same people who went after him and had him on the defense are the same people who went after Wright.

I am nervous about the younger generations because they seem to be unable to see the truth and put the pieces together.

Obama is a black politican not a black leader. If they are unable to see this then I am not apart of it.

Sad.

IT SEEMS TO ME THAT THOSE YOUNGSTERS WHO FALL FOR THEIR "EDUCATION" SHOULD TAKE A LESSON FROM OUR HISTORY...AND MAYBE SOME MARKETING CLASSES...AND THE MOST THING THAT IS LACKING AMONGST OUR PEOPLE YOUNG AND OLD IS WISDOM...

THE MAIN THING IS THIS...IT ISN'T WISE TO POINT FINGERS IN PUBLIC...BUT, IT IS WISE TO CALL EACHOTHER OUT FOR OUR SHORTCOMINGS...

IMAGES SHAPE OUR REALITY...(MARKETING)...WHETHER YOU CHOOSE TO CALL SOMEONE A LEADER, RAPPER, POLITICIAN, OR AN ASS...THAT IS APART OF YOUR REALITY...THIS IS IMAGING...AND THE IMAGES GO FARTHER THAN YOUR "INTELLIGENCE" CAN CONCIEVE...

WHAT IS THE MERIT IN OUR IMAGES TODAY?...NAS HAD TO CHANGE HIS ALBUM FROM NIGGER TO JUST A PICTURE OF HIM BEING LASHED...THE IMAGE SPOKE VOLUMES...AND WHETHER OR NOT YOU AGREE WITH HIS TATICS TO GET HIS MESSAGES OUT...THEY WORKED UNCONSIOUSLY...THAT IMAGE IS PART OF A MUCH DEEPER COMMUNICATION THAT GOES BEYOND VERBAL...

WE HAVE TO LEARN THE POWER IN THE IMAGE...WE WILL CONTINUE TO BE DUPED INTO THE SAME OLE GAMES BECAUSE WE SIMPLY DO NOT KNOW WHEN TO KEEP OUR MOUTHS SHUT (ABOUT EACHOTHER) AND PAINT A PICTURE...

THE TIME YOU HAVE SPENT ON THIS VERY INTERNET READING THIS...YOU HAVE HAD MILLIONS OF MESSAGES LEAKED INTO YOUR BRAIN...AND YOU WILL ACT ON THEM WITHOUT EVEN KNOWING IT...

THIS IS WHAT HAS BEEN HAPPENING TO OUR PEOPLE FOR CENTURIES NOW...WE HAVE BEEN ACTING ON THE MESSAGES OF "CRABS IN A BARREL" AND "I WANNA BE HEARD...LOOK AT ME...THE HNIC" AND WE CAN'T EVEN SEE THAT WE ARE HEADED TO OUR OWN DEMISE EVERYTIME....

LET NAS DO HIS THING...BOYCE WATKINS...JESSIE...OBAMA..WRIGHT...AND WHOMEVER...

THE REAL QUESTION IS...

WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING TODAY YOUTH???

THE ANSWER

PAINT YOUR OWN PICTURE..SHAPE YOUR OWN REALITY...

I don't know enough about what Wright said/did and why Nas is upset with him. I do know that those old Civil Rights remnants need to think about succession planning and stop trying to stay in the limelight. They need to be using their knowledge and wisdom in strategic planning to lead the next generation of leaders and step away from the podium.
Furthermore, I will say that Nas might be the most dangerous Negro of the year, and that's a good thing for those of you not familiar with the term (Obama is NOT one, at least not yet). Listen to his new album, and tell me if you think I'm wrong.

Well, First of all I want to start off by saying that we are all human and we are definitely entitled to our on opinion. On the other hand when your opinion starts rubbing off on me and making me look bad, that is where I draw the line. Nas is not on the up and up to me with those jackets and things. Me personally, I do use the 'N' word but I use it in the privacy of my own home with my friends. To me it's like cursing, its really not appropiate to say in public but people do it anyway. I feel as though Nas is doing what Whoopi Stated about us taking the word that was used to lower us and make us feel like we are nothing, and changing it around to be a positive word and not a negative word. Look at the word Bitch. In the dictionary it is a female dog, but we have some how flipped this word to mean otherwise. I feel as though it is just a word but the thing is that the wrod Nas is using in the public eye has alot of meaning and hurt feelings behind it and some people just can't deal with that. I feel like the more we say the N word the more it stays relevant that yeah 'THEY' gave 'US' the name for bad but it is ALL GOOD.
And also about Rev. Wright, I am sick of people comparing him and Obama. Just because Obama went to Rev. Wrights' church for 20 years does not mean that he is Rev. Wright. I've been around my Mom for 28yrs and I do not agree with alot of things that she does and says but she still my Mom. So I feel as though the same goes with Obama and Rev. Wright. We all have to understand that Rev. Wright is speaking from his life time of experiences and there is nothing that no man or woman on earth can do to change what Rev. Wright has already been through. I feel as though he definitely has the right to voice his opinion and state what are facts in his lifetime.
I honestly have to say that I sometimes find my self wanting to just cry about the things that have went on and the things that are going on. I am definitely voting for Obama come Nov. But I will still be praying to God to make a better way because this is truly ridiculous. We never had an advantage in this life. I agree with alot I have read today and I am extremely hurt by the way Blacks are still being mistreated today. What I find real appauling is how other races can't seem to see that they have fallen victim to the White Man is Superior mess too. Its really sad.
I'm not sure what they are going to do for all the pain they ahve caused but i do want my 40 acres with a small house included theycan keep the dam mule and give me a car to drive back in fourth to work.

Good comment above. Your feelings come through very strongly and I'm sure what you've said would be echoed by thousands of black people in America. It's a messed up world and although I'm white I can see that the white man is responsible for most of the problems we all face (His problems too).

Having said that, I am a minority living in a 'black' country and even here, there is little justice for ordinary people. However, I'd rather live here and face occasional prejudice or discrimination than live in America where although I would have privilege, I would be part of a far, far worse system. This election is exposing for everyone to see, just how extensive racism is in America. Hopefully, it will also reveal those who are not racist and can be trusted.
