Racist Reporter Turns Law-Abiding Four Year Old Into a Thug

by Dr. Boyce Watkins, Syracuse University – Scholarship in Action

After a recent drive-by shooting involving two teens in Chicago, a CBS affiliate (WBBM) decided to engage in some good old fashioned racist black male stereotyping.  The station interviewed a four year-old boy to ask him what he thought about the violence in the neighborhood, and ended up completely misrepresenting the child in the process.

Dr. Wilmer Leon: Debt Compromise on the Backs of African Americans is Really an Historical Trend

By

Dr. Wilmer J. Leon III

During this debt and deficit debate President Obama has been very clear in stating, “Not only is it not fair if all this is done on the backs of middle-class families,” Obama said, “it doesn’t make sense. … That’s why people from both parties have said the best way to take on our deficit is with a balanced approach … one where wealthy Americans and corporations pay their share, too.”  It appeared as though closing tax loopholes and increased revenues coming from the “…oil company or a corporate jet owner that’s doing so well …” was not a point of compromise.

Survey: African Americans Divide Over Cornel West’s Critique of President Barack Obama

by Dr. Boyce Watkins

In a recent survey by YourBlackWorld.com, it was found that African Americans are divided over the comments of Princeton University professor Cornel West, who has critiqued the Obama Administration in the media over the past several weeks.  A mild majority of those who gave a definite answer (44.6%; only 87.2% said “yes” or “no”) claim that West is wrong about Obama, while a slightly lower number (42.6%) said that West is correct in his criticism.   The remainder (12.8%) said that they are not sure.

Duchess Harris: The Alienation of Black Women from Feminist Movements

For 20 years I have read how Black women felt alienated by the second wave of feminism, but because I was born during this time period, I never "felt" it until the 2008 Presidential election.
It started with the extremely unpleasant showdown between Gloria Steinem and Melissa Harris Lacewell, (now Perry) surrounding Steinem's NY Times Op Ed about then-Senator Barack Obama.
This was followed by the late Geraldine Ferraro's dismissive comments that Senator Obama was winning the race because he was not White.

"If Obama was a white man, he would not be in this position. ...He happens to be very lucky to be who he is. And the country is caught up in the concept."

NAACP Sponsor Wells Fargo Being Sued by Justice Department for Discriminatory Lending

lkdsksd

by Dr. Boyce Watkins, Syracuse University – Scholarship in Action

The United States Justice Department is preparing to launch an investigation against Wells Fargo, a company that serves as the largest home mortgage lender in the country.  The company is being accused of taking advantage of minority consumers by selling them loans that were overpriced and more likely to lead to default.

Wells Fargo is not only the fourth-largest bank in the United States, it is also a key sponsor of the annual NAACP Convention.  The organization took criticism last year when they dropped a discrimination lawsuit against the company shortly before announcing that they were set to receive money from the bank.

New Study: Racial Wealth Gap Worst in 25 Years

by Dr. Boyce Watkins, Syracuse UniversityScholarship in Action

A new study presented some disturbing, yet expected news about the sad state of economic affairs within the African American community. According to the study, the wealth gap between white and black Americans has become the widest that it’s been in the last 25 years. As it stands, whites have a wealth level that is 20 times greater than blacks, and 18 times greater than Hispanics.

Much of the drop in black family wealth is due primarily to the decline in home values and heightened unemployment during the great recession of the last three years. African Americans currently have the highest unemployment rates in America, with the most recent data listing the rate at 16.2 percent.

Dr. Boyce: The Debt Ceiling Battle is a Symptom of Much Greater Economic Troubles

by Dr. Boyce Watkins, Syracuse UniversityScholarship in Action

In early 2001, America’s economic future was rosy: Our government was sitting on a massive budget surplus, and the Congressional Budget Office predicted that the next 10 years would carry our nation down the path of seemingly endless prosperity. This was a good time for President George W. Bush to push through a set of massive tax cuts, significantly reducing government revenue at a time when we didn’t quite seem to need the money.

Julius Kane: Why Good Times is Far More Relevant than the Cosby Show Will Ever Be

By Julius Kane

Stop playin' 'Good Times' was better than 'The Cosby show' for real; the first three seasons before the father's character was killed off, anyway. You can run around town and act like you're embarrassed of 'Good Times' but I sure as hell ain't. A couple of so called critics even said 'The Cosby Show' was a "real depiction of a Black family." Again, stop playin'. How realistic is it even in WHITE AMERICA for a doctor to be married to a lawyer, have half a dozen kids and they all go to college? What did 'The Cosby Show' teach you? Sure, it made you wish for a better life and smashed a lot cultural stereotypes. But 'The Cosby Show'wasn't the best Black television show of all time; not by a long shot.  In actuality'The Cosby Show' was the best Black television show for White folks to watch. It allowed White folks to see a different side of the Black experience and gave Black folks faces, places and images they could finally be proud of.

Dr. Boyce: Add the Caddie to the List of People Seeking to Destroy Mr. Woods

by Dr. Boyce Watkins, Syracuse UniversityScholarship in Action

It appears that Tiger Woods’ wife is not the only person who has a bone to pick with him.  Tiger’s former caddy, Steve Williams, is planning to write a tell-all book about his life with Woods, and some expect that it’s not going to be pretty.  After serving by Tiger’s side for 12 years, Williams was fired recently, and doesn’t appear to be happy about it.  As a result, Williams is already letting the drama fly like a golf ball into a breezy summer day.

Williams has mentioned that one of the chapters of his book will be all about Woods and their relationship.  Of course, this is the chapter that got him the book deal, and the one that everyone is waiting on.

JasmineHughes: Summer’s Eve “Talking Vagina” Ad Offends Some Black Women

By JasmineHughes, Your Black World

Dr. Boyce: Getting Out of Your Own Private Prison

by Dr. Boyce Watkins, Syracuse University – Scholarship in Action

I just spoke to my friend Ryan Mack about our “Never Going Back” initiative to attack the problems of mass incarceration and recidivism in America. During the conversation, I had a revelation: Most of us are just a step away from being incarcerated, or have yet to understand what it truly means to be free. Sure, the US incarcerates more of its citizens than any country in the world, but it might be deeper than you think.

The United States Constitution doesn’t abolish slavery for everyone. Actually, if you’ve been convicted of a felony, the 13th Amendment actually says that it’s OK to force one into slave labor (please go take a look). Given that we are slapping felony convictions on individuals like Kelly Williams-Bolar, the otherwise law-abiding mother in Ohio who was sent to jail for sending her kids to the wrong school district, we can see just how easy it is for that arbitrary label to be applied.

Study Finds that Black Men Live Longer in Prison than Out of It

by Dr. Boyce Watkins.

Many of us have seen the dismal statistics for black males in America.  African American men are at the bottom of the barrel in nearly every category of life, including healthcare, education, incarceration, and unemployment.  Many of us raise our black boys with little to no understanding of how many of these statistics are perpetuated by a series of systems that serve to enhance and promote a lifestyle that leads to an early death.   That is one reason why we’ve expressed concern for hip-hop music, fueled by corporate America, that promotes a self-destructive lifestyle that many young men emulate.

It turns out that the facts might be worse than many could have speculated.  According to a recent study, black men are half as likely to die in prison than if they are free.   The authors of the study claim that easier access to healthcare, protection from drugs and alcohol and the ability to avoid deadly black-on-black violence leads to a longer life span for those who are incarcerated.  African American males are the only group for which these facts hold true, according to the authors of the study.

Beware of Media and Politicians Seeking to Control Your Mind

Dr. Boyce Watkins, Your Black WorldScholarship in Action

I saw a headline today involving Pastor Jeremiah Wright.  The headline stated the following: "Jeremiah Wright's Church Denomination Banishes ‘God the Father’ for Gay Inclusion.”  The headline was interesting in that it almost seemed to imply that Jeremiah Wright had made the decision himself.

What was most peculiar about this article is that it was dead wrong.  First, Pastor Wright has not been the head of The Trinity United Church of Christ for at least two years.  Therefore, he doesn't make the church's decisions.  Secondly, the United Church of Christ is a national body, meaning that even Trinity itself cannot make such a decision.  So, the goal of getting Pastor Wright's name into a juicy headline played a dominant role in how this article was written.
